Dr. Amanda Kerns
Gaining both her BS in Biological Sciences and her husband, Ryan, during her time at NC State University, Dr. Kerns will always be a Wolfpack fan. While earning her Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Chapel Hill, she researched and co-authored several studies on the links between pregnancy and infant oral health. A children’s basketball coach, she discovered her passion for pediatric dentistry during a service trip in Costa Rica.
She completed her training at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA where she received both a specialty certificate and a master’s degree. Her master’s thesis focused on identifying strategies for addressing the epidemic of early childhood caries and this is a cause she remains passionate about. A Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Kerns is also a member of the American Dental Association, NC Society of Pediatric Dentistry and American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. From 2018-2020, Dr. Kerns worked as one of three pediatric dentists on the island of Kauai, Hawaii.

Dr Jay Darji
Dr. Jay Darji knew he wanted to be a pediatric dentist from a young age. His inspiration lies in the ability to provide treatment and educate patients in a field that he struggled with as a child. A true Charlottean, Dr. Jay began his journey as a dental assistant at Charlotte Pediatric Dentistry. After graduating from East Carolina School of Dentistry, Dr. Jay knew he wanted to return home to Charlotte, NC, and take care of his community like they took care of him. When asked what he enjoys most about being a pediatric dentist, Dr. Jay stated: “Being able to work with patients from day one and seeing transformations in oral health while creating a confident smile”.
Dr. Crystal Hayes
Dr. Hayes is passionate about pediatric dentistry because it allows her to make a positive impact on children’s health and confidence. She loves helping children develop healthy habits, overcome fears, and build lifelong trust with dental care. When asked to describe her passion for pediatric dentistry, Dr. Hayes responded, “As a pediatric dentist, I see myself as that champion—someone who not only cares for a child’s oral health but also builds trust, eases fears, and creates positive experiences that shape their lifelong well-being.”
Growing up in Wilmington, Dr. Hayes dreamed of becoming a marine biologist. However, her passion for working with children led her to pediatric dentistry. When she's not working, Dr. Hayes enjoys traveling, trying new cuisines, and spending time with her two daughters and family. Returning to her hometown has made these moments even more special as she shares them with those she loves.
